Apple's biggest AI upgrade yet, Google's inside man, Zuckerberg eyes the cloud

Plus: Microsoft locks down the Pentagon, Amazon's data center fix.

Good morning. It’s Thursday, May 28. Today we are covering:

  • Apple previews the biggest overhaul of iOS in years — a new Siri app with chat history, a dedicated AI camera mode, and generative photo editing tools arriving with iOS 27

  • A Google engineer is under federal arrest for using internal search data to place winning Polymarket bets, netting $1.2 million under the alias AlphaRaccoon

  • Zuckerberg says Meta entering the cloud computing market is “definitely on the table” as the company sits on a $125 billion data center build

  • Microsoft and Dell land a $9.7 billion Pentagon contract to consolidate and clean up U.S. military software licenses

  • AWS solves a major liquid cooling challenge that could define the next generation of AI data centers

Let’s dive in

Apple’s iOS 27 Preview: New Siri App, Pro Camera Mode, and AI Photo Tools
By Mark Gurman via Bloomberg

  • Apple will overhaul Siri into a standalone conversational app with persistent chat history in iOS 27, letting users interact through text or voice in a back-and-forth format similar to ChatGPT or Claude, with personalized context drawn from Mail and Messages.

  • The Camera app will get a dedicated Siri mode alongside existing photo and video modes, activating Visual Intelligence to scan nutrition labels, identify objects, and read contact information directly from the viewfinder.

  • Three new AI photo editing tools — Extend, Enhance, and Reframe — will arrive in the Photos app, though Bloomberg reports that Extend and Reframe are unreliable in testing and may be delayed to iOS 27.1; Apple plans to unveil the full iOS 27 slate at WWDC on June 8.

Google Employee Charged With Using Inside Information to Make $1 Million on Polymarket
By Aaron Katersky via ABC News

  • Michele Spagnuolo, 36, a Google software engineer and Italian citizen, was arrested Wednesday in New York on federal charges of commodities fraud, wire fraud, and money laundering after allegedly using his employer’s internal search trend data to place bets on Polymarket under the alias AlphaRaccoon.

  • Spagnuolo allegedly used access to Google’s Year in Search data — available through an internal tool open to all employees — to correctly bet that the singer D4vd would be the most-searched person of 2025, netting $1.2 million after Google published its results on December 4, 2025.

  • A Google spokesperson confirmed the company is cooperating with law enforcement and placed Spagnuolo on leave, calling using confidential data for personal bets “a serious breach of policy”; this is the second prediction market fraud case brought by the Southern District of New York this year.

Mark Zuckerberg Says Meta Starting a Cloud Business Is ‘Definitely on the Table’
By Jonathan Vanian via CNBC

  • At Meta’s annual shareholder meeting, Mark Zuckerberg said the company could enter cloud computing if it ends up with excess data center capacity from its $125-145 billion AI infrastructure build, noting that outside companies ask “almost every week” to buy compute from Meta at a premium.

  • Meta is the only one of the four major U.S. hyperscalers without a public cloud infrastructure business, leaving it uniquely positioned to challenge Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud if it decides to flip the switch.

  • Zuckerberg said the company has held back because it currently needs all the compute it is building, but confirmed that entering the market is “definitely on the table” as Meta’s data center footprint continues to expand.

Microsoft and Dell Win $9.7 Billion Pentagon Software Clean-Up Contract
By Jez Corden via Windows Central

  • The U.S. Department of Defense awarded a five-year contract to Microsoft and Dell to consolidate fragmented Microsoft software licenses across the entire military apparatus, including intelligence services and the U.S. Coast Guard, in a deal the Pentagon says will save taxpayers $422 million annually.

  • The agreement covers Office, Azure, and Active Directory, replacing a patchwork of overlapping contracts and service-level agreements built up over decades of separate procurement processes across military branches.

  • Dell stock hit an all-time high of $305 in after-hours trading, up 129% in six months, following the announcement; the deal further entrenches Microsoft as the U.S. government’s primary software and cloud provider.

Amazon Thinks the Future of Data Centers Depends on a Technical Problem It Just Solved
By Lauren Goode via Wired

  • AWS developed a custom closed-loop liquid cooling system called the In Row Heat Exchanger (IRHX) to manage the extreme heat generated by next-generation Nvidia AI chips, going from a whiteboard concept to a fully deployed unit in under a year.

  • The system places a cold plate directly on top of chips and recirculates liquid through sealed tubes continuously, unlike open-loop designs that consume additional water — and can be installed in existing data center infrastructure without major modifications.

  • AWS engineers say the breakthrough is critical for the next generation of AI data centers, where the density and power draw of modern GPUs have made traditional air cooling insufficient; the IRHX is already being rolled out across Amazon’s global data center fleet.
