GPT-5.1: A smarter, more conversational ChatGPT
OpenAI
OpenAI launches GPT-5.1 with Instant and Thinking models that are warmer, better at instruction following, and use adaptive reasoning for harder questions; results include stronger math/coding performance (e.g., AIME 2025, Codeforces) and clearer, more empathetic responses.
Rollout: begins today for paid (Pro, Plus, Go, Business), then to free users; Enterprise/Edu get a 7-day early-access toggle; GPT-5.1 becomes the default, with GPT-5 kept in the legacy dropdown for 3 months; API arriving this week as gpt-5.1-chat-latest (Instant) and GPT-5.1 (Thinking); GPT-5 Pro → GPT-5.1 Pro soon; GPT-5.1 Auto routes queries to the best model.
Customization upgrades: new tone presets (Professional, Candid, Quirky) alongside Default/Friendly/Efficient; Cynical and Nerdy remain; granular controls for conciseness, warmth, scanability, emoji use, with proactive preference prompts; settings now apply across all chats immediately and models better honor custom instructions.
𝕏: GPT-5.1 is out! It’s a nice upgrade. I particularly like the improvements in instruction following, and the adaptive thinking. The intelligence and style improvements are good too. - Sam Altman (@sama)
Apple launches Digital ID, a way to carry your passport on your phone for use at TSA checkpoints
By Sarah Perez via TechCrunch
Apple launches Digital ID in Apple Wallet to store a U.S. passport on iPhone and Apple Watch for TSA use at 250+ airports on domestic flights; live in a dozen states and Puerto Rico; it doesn’t replace the physical passport and isn’t valid for international travel.
Setup: Wallet → Driver’s License or ID Cards → Digital ID; scan the passport’s photo page and embedded chip, take a selfie with liveness checks; present like Apple Pay with Face ID/Touch ID, with a preview of requested data before sharing.
Status & next: still beta as TSA readers roll out, so travelers should carry a physical ID; Apple plans acceptance at businesses and online for age verification (e.g., venues, alcohol delivery) with privacy-by-design (Apple can’t see usage and no device handover).

Inside Microsoft’s New AI ‘Super Factory’
By Sebastian Herrera via Wall Street Journal
Microsoft is doubling its data-center footprint over the next two years and has unveiled an AI “super factory” in Atlanta as part of its Fairwater network.
The two-story complex will house hundreds of thousands of Nvidia GPUs with dedicated high-speed links to other Fairwater sites to pool compute at scale.
Built as a new class of hubs for AI training, the facility is designed to connect seamlessly with Microsoft’s broader infrastructure to harness immense computing power.
𝕏: Today we announced our new Fairwater datacenter in Atlanta, connected with our first Fairwater site in Wisconsin and our broader Azure footprint to create the world’s first AI superfactory. Fairwater exemplifies our vision for a fungible fleet: infra that can serve any workload, anywhere, on fit-for-purpose accelerators and network paths, with maximum performance and efficiency… - Satya Nadella (@satyanadella)
How AI Language Learning App Speak Is Taking On Duolingo
By Rashi Shrivastava via Forbes
Speak, founded by former Thiel Fellows, is a voice-first AI tutor built on OpenAI models that drills real-life conversational fluency and pronunciation via role-plays and custom prompts; it adds streaks/leaderboards and supports Korean, Spanish, Japanese, French, and Italian in addition to English.
Traction: 15M downloads, >$100M ARR on a $1B valuation; consumer subs $80–$200; enterprise since 2024 with ~500 companies (e.g., KPMG, HD Hyundai) mainly in South Korea, expanding in Japan, Taiwan, and a focused U.S. push starting June 2025.
Competitive frame: pursuing Duolingo ($724M 2024 revenue, $1.02B 2025E), arguing Duolingo skews grammar/vocab while Speak builds speaking “muscle memory”; investors include Khosla Ventures, Accel, and the OpenAI Startup Fund, leveraging a Seoul-first “sandbox” strategy.
𝕏: Thanks @RashiShrivast18 for telling the @speak story! We’re pushing hard to make the world’s best AI language tutor available to everyone. Super excited for the slate of new feature launches coming later this year! Stay tuned. - Connor Zwick (@connorzwick)
Russian Humanoid Robot Falls on Its Face in Hyped Debut
By Neil Vigdor via The New York Times
AIDOL, a Russian humanoid robot, staggered and face-planted during its hyped Moscow debut (Nov 12), with organizers blaming calibration/lighting issues; CEO Vladimir Vitukhin said the robot is still “learning.”
Developers claim AIDOL can walk, handle objects, and communicate, targeting uses in automotive, warehouses, medicine, and entertainment, with heavy investment in a humanlike face.
In context, humanoid robotics investment topped $1.6B in 2024 (excluding Tesla’s Optimus); stumbles are common (see Boston Dynamics’ Atlas bloopers) as dozens of companies race to commercialize robots for homes and businesses.
𝕏: In true orc style: russia presented its first AI robot and it immediately fell over during the presentation. Just booted up and already drunk. Tradition respected - Angelica Shalagina (@angelshalagina)
