Jury in Los Angeles finds Meta, YouTube negligent in social media addiction trial
By Jonathan Vanian via CNBC
A Los Angeles jury found Meta and Google’s YouTube negligent for failing to warn users about the risks of their platforms, siding with a plaintiff who said she became addicted to Instagram and YouTube as a child and suffered severe mental health harms.
The jury awarded $6 million in total damages—$3 million in compensatory damages and $3 million in punitive damages—with Meta responsible for 70% of the compensatory award and $2.1 million in punitive damages, while YouTube was assigned the remaining 30% and $900,000 in punitive damages.
The case is being cast as a potential “Big Tobacco” moment for the social media industry, with more trials ahead in California and federal court as plaintiffs increasingly target app design features like recommendation algorithms, autoplay, and persistent notifications rather than third-party content.

Melania Trump used a White House summit on education, innovation, and A.I. to spotlight Figure 03, a humanoid robot from Figure AI, framing robotics as part of a broader push to prepare children for a more technology-driven future.
The robot walked with Trump, addressed attendees in 11 languages, and marked what outlets described as the first appearance of a humanoid robot as a guest at the White House, underscoring the event’s symbolism as much as its policy message.
The gathering, part of Trump’s “Fostering the Future Together” initiative, brought together foreign first spouses and tech leaders around the role of A.I. in children’s development and education, with Trump arguing that future tools could act as highly personalized tutors.

Google bumps up Q Day deadline to 2029, far sooner than previously thought
By Dan Goodin via Ars Technica
Google has moved its internal Q Day readiness target up to 2029, a much more aggressive deadline than prior industry and government timelines, signaling growing urgency around the risk that quantum computers could break today’s RSA and elliptic-curve cryptography.
The company is already pushing post-quantum cryptography (PQC) into Android, adding ML-DSA support to the hardware root of trust, verified boot, remote attestation, and Keystore, while also planning to migrate the Play Store and app developer signatures—changes that could create major new demands for Android developers.
Google did not fully explain the accelerated timeline, but the move appears tied to rapidly improving estimates for quantum attacks, including research showing a 2048-bit RSA key could be broken in under a week with about 1 million noisy qubits; that threat is especially pressing because of store-now-decrypt-later attacks already targeting data with long-term value.

Google launches Lyria 3 Pro music generation model
By Ivan Mehta via TechCrunch
Google has launched Lyria 3 Pro, a new AI music generation model that expands track length from 30 seconds to three minutes and gives users more control over song structure, including intros, verses, choruses, and bridges.
The model is rolling out to paid Gemini subscribers as well as Google Vids, ProducerAI, Vertex AI, the Gemini API, and AI Studio, signaling Google’s push to bring AI music tools to both consumers and enterprise users.
Google says Lyria 3 Pro was trained on partner data plus permissible content from YouTube and Google, does not mimic specific artists, and labels all outputs with SynthID as the broader music industry adds safeguards against mislabeled AI-generated music.
𝕏: I had access to the new Google Lyria 3 Pro music AI. Its quite good. I’ve been ruining(?) Rilke by giving the AI the First Elegy & asking it to make it “more 1990s boy band” (”oooo the beginning of terror, girl”) Catchy! It is also nuts that you can ask an AI to do this & it can - Ethan Mollick (@emollick)
Anduril Wants to Own the Future of War Tech. Mishaps, Delays and Challenges Abound.
By Paresh Dave via WIRED
WIRED’s investigation, based on interviews with 37 current and former employees and contractors, says Anduril’s push to reinvent defense manufacturing has been hampered by safety lapses, schedule slips, supply-chain bottlenecks, and management churn across sites in Mississippi, Atlanta, and North Carolina, including a burn injury at its rocket-motor plant and repeated production setbacks.
The company’s core pitch—build weapons faster, cheaper, and at scale than legacy contractors—has attracted billions in venture funding, major government support, and ambitious expansions like Arsenal-1 in Ohio, but workers describe a culture of deadline pressure, retaliation fears, and “fail fast” experimentation that often collided with the realities of making complex military hardware.
At the center of the story is Anduril’s troubled McHenry, Mississippi rocket-motor operation, where a highly touted new production hub called Roberto reportedly opened before key systems were ready, missed delivery targets, cycled through leaders, and still had not publicly produced a test-fired motor months later—raising doubts about whether Anduril can deliver on its grand vision for the future of war tech.
