Meta's teen deal, Anthropic vs. Pentagon, AI cyber alarm

Plus: Meta's robot builders, Bluesky's viral opt-out.

Good morning. End of the week, end of the month almost. It’s Friday, August 28. Take a breath — you’ve earned it. See you Monday.

Meta just turned its own teen safety settlement into leverage, tying nearly a third of the payout to whether YouTube and TikTok agree to play by the same rules, a shrewd move that could reshape how the whole industry handles child safety, or expose how little pressure a settlement can actually put on rivals.

Today we are covering:

  • Meta ties 5.3 billion dollars of its 18 billion dollar teen safety settlement to whether TikTok and YouTube match its new limits

  • A federal judge rules the Pentagon’s blacklisting of Anthropic was “illegal and baseless,” clearing the AI company for military contracts

  • OpenAI, Anthropic and more than 100 other companies warn that AI is making cyberattacks on hospitals and water systems dangerously cheap
